This came up in Guild Chat when I was on tonight, thought I would post a little detail and reference since there was some confusion overall.

Here you can see that indeed, focused pets in their 60's begin coming with a full set of gear (armor, jewelry, NOT weapons) that is equivalent to the gear that the pet's owner could summon and hand to them anyway...so it sure is a waste of time and mana to summon gear for them yourself.
But, an important point that many mages miss is that there are higher tiers of summoned gear available to you at ANY level, until you get up to 100+. It is ALWAYS worthwhile, if you want to maximize your pet's abilities to seek out better summoned gear...that is, better than what he comes with automatically, and better than what you could summon for him yourself. This is why pet gear is available for sale in the bazaar for example.
To illustrate this point, using the example from the link above, look at the stats on just the helm the lvl 81-85 pets come with automatically
Prime Plate Helm
MAGIC ITEM TEMPORARY
Slot: HEAD
AC: 22
HP: +31
Compare that with the stats for the Helm from the Folded Pack of Spectral Plate that a level 86 (?) mage can summon
MAGIC ITEM TEMPORARY
Slot: HEAD
AC: 35
HP: +65
WT: 7.5 Size: MEDIUM
This is a huge difference and of course when you look at all the gear together the difference is very significant. Note that the mage with a 81-85 lvl pet can't summon that gear yet himself, so sure you could ride out without it and do OK, but why not do better? This is why pet gear is available in the bazaar regularly, and this is why smart mages will always seek it out; it is not a waste of money in my experience.
Beyond Spectral there is Frightforged Plate, and guess what? That becomes usable by Mage pets BEFORE their Masters can summon it, so again, its worthwhile buying it or asking for it from a higher level as soon as your pet can equip it. And there's another set after Frightforged too.
Whats special about Spectral Plate is that it does not have level requirements on it, so you can purchase it from the bazaar even while you're still in the Tutorial and give a set to your pet. Higher levels of gear (Frightforged, etc) do have level requirements, so you have to wait for those. At low levels, up to about 35ish really, your pet will become an unstoppable monster. And I'm talking post-"nerf". My mage in his 20's was sending his pet into groups of reds and sitting on his (edit) to watch if he wanted. I had a healer merc tagging along until I realized he constantly went into panic mode and didn't cast anyway, so I suspended him...never needed him anyway unless I got real cocky. I was in my 50's within 5 days (this was exactly a year ago).
